The Macallan 15 Year Old Double Cask
Move over, wine and cheese. If you’re looking for that perfect accompaniment to your sophisticated cheese, pick up a dram and get inspired from some of the pairings below, to feature at your next gathering, or to savour just by yourself. Both whisky and cheese-making are sophisticated arts defined by traditions and time-honoured processes. Complex to master, but easy to enjoy – especially together – The Macallan’s range of flavour notes are the perfect complement to the rich creaminess of artisan cheeses. The Macallan is a single malt scotch whisky (to qualify as a single malt, it has to be made of 100 percent barley and brewed at a single distillery), founded in 1824, in the heart of Speyside, Scotland. The whisky is matured in oak casks from Spain and the US, from where it gets its natural colour.
Today, on World Cheese Day, we bring you four iconic whisky and cheese pairings, put forth by Elizabeth Chubbuck, American Cheese Society Certified Cheese Professional and Murray’s Cheese Senior Vice President, especially for The Macallan whisky.
The Macallan 12 Year Old Double Cask x Young Manchego Cheese The Macallan 12 Year Old Double Cask
The Macallan Double Cask 12 Years Old coupled with a Young Manchego
The Double Cask 12 Years Old could be coupled with a Young Spanish-origin Manchego because this rich, mellow sheep’s milk cheese cuts through the spice, raisins, and citrus notes (candied orange is one of them) within the Double Cask 12 Years Old, while improving the notes of creamy butterscotch, honey, and vanilla custard. It also pairs well with French sheep’s milk cheese or any earthy pecorino.
The Macallan Sherry Oak 12 Years Old with Aged gruye?re Cheese The Macallan 12 Year Old Sherry Oak Cask
The Macallan Sherry Oak 12 Years Old matched with Aged Gruyère
Sherry Oak 12 Years Old can be a fine match for Swiss Aged Gruyère because Alpine cheese typically leads with hints of caramelized onion, roasted garlic, and sweet nutty notes. These flavours pair wonderfully with the mellow wood smoke, spice, and dried fruit notes in Sherry Oak 12 Years Old. It also goes well with savoury Alpine cheeses like Challerhocker.
The Macallan Triple Cask Matured 15 Years Old x Mellow blue cheese
The Macallan Triple Cask Matured 15 Years Old paired with Mellow Blue Cheese
Triple Cask Matured 15 Years Old is a great complement to Mellow Blue Cheese as the buttery and salty flavours present in mellow blue cheese is a delightful, stark contrast to the floral and citrusy notes found in the Triple Cask Matured 15 Years Old (there are also notes of rich chocolate and raisin). It’s a perfect instance of opposites attracting. It also pairs well with rich buttery blues or Bavarian blue cheese.
The Macallan Rare Cask x Camembert Cheese
The Macallan Rare Cask paired with Camembert
A Rare Cask can be paired with the timeless French Camembert. This bloomy rinded and funky French cheese has floral, sweet notes that bring out Rare Cask’s hints of maple syrup, nutty spices, and candied nuts. The notes of vanilla and citrus also help cut through the cheese’s richness. It also pairs well with a classic Brie or soft-ripened triple crème cheese.
Lifestyle Insider is a kind of junction point, connecting people with diverse interests that touch on the more luxurious aspects of lifestyle – fashion, design, travel, food and spirits, art, watches and jewellery, cars, yachts, and aviation, and technology. People today don’t fit into boxes and categories. In our individual ways, we are interested in diverse themes, products, and the challenges that face our world today. You will judge how well this effort of mine caters to your passions and proclivities.
Lifestyle Insider is a showcase of all that is beautiful and luxe. Behind every creation, is a designer, chef, entrepreneur, or a design maison. I have delved into my own appreciation for objetsde luxe that I have admired over the years – be it a love of fashion from the world’s top Parisian and Italian fashion maisons and their ’90s muses, or the care that goes into sari and Indian textile collections in my own family. Growing up on four continents, as the daughter of a former Indian Ambassador, I’ve seen a remarkable array of historic places and met a myriad people. My aim is to bring my world view into this website, a curation of what I find particularly stunning, unique, and newsworthy.
It’s an exciting time for brands all over the world. With change comes opportunity. With the global ‘reset’ and uncertainty on many fronts, there is a chance to write a new script. Let’s be those pioneers.
