When reggae legend Bob Marley wrote this song in 1965 at a time of political turmoil in his native Jamaica, he had no idea that it would become an anthem of peace and unity, much like John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’. Beneath the lyrics of ‘One Love’ lay a message of injustice against the oppressed. The song, released that year by Bob Marley and the Wailers, went on to become a chart topper in 1977 upon its re-release. Today, it’s been unveiled as a powerful remake by Southern California sports eyewear brand Oakley®, sung by British-Jamaican singer-songwriter Celeste (who was especially selected by Bob Marley’s family), as part of the brand’s 2020 For the Love of Sport Campaign.
The official release aims to inspire hope and positivity during a time of uncertainty by celebrating sport, and how it can enlighten and uplift. The reworked verses were co-written by Oakley® Athletes including Diamond DeShields, Ryan Sheckler, Oksana Masters, Caroline Buchanan and Ítalo Ferreira. This reinterpretation evolves the classic song into a modern-day love story, amplified by an official music video that showcases a dynamic display of passion and determination as viewers follow athletes’ individual journeys and the way sport has impacted their lives and the people around them.Oakley Athlete Diamond DeShields
Celeste, who was born in America, was selected to perform the song because of her ability to convey a message through her soulful-tones and her mantra to create meaningful music that can make a difference. Most recently, Celeste, has won the 2020 Brit Rising Star Award and was named the number one breakthrough act on the BBC Music Sound of 2020 List.
Oakley®’s For The Love of Sport campaign honours one of the most universal passions – that of sport. During the writing process, Oakley®, part of the Luxottica Group, interviewed those with an intimate connection to sport – its global network of athletes. In conversation, they explored the unifying qualities of sport through their personal journeys, including recent stretches of solitude and peaks of frustration. Their reflections revealed a commonality between them – sport’s ability to push through boundaries, and overcome adversity, even during the toughest times.Oakley Athlete Oksana Masters in the One Love video
“Sport has the power to evoke emotion, whether participating or spectating,” says Ben Goss, Oakley® Global Marketing Director. “And the world is in a fragile place right now. By sharing what drives us and our athletes, this love of sport, our hope is that it can have a positive impact on uplifting the community during these uncertain times.”
“Sport, specifically soccer, was my Dad’s second love after music, and it brought him a great deal of joy throughout his life,” says Ziggy Marley, son of Bob Marley and Rita Marley. “The world really needs love right now, and we’re thrilled to work with Oakley® on this amazing reinterpretation of One Love, so it can be meaningful to a new generation during a time when it’s needed most.”
Oakley®’s One Love debuted on SiriusXM’s Marley Tuff Gong radio during a live broadcast with a special introduction from Skip Marley at 8am PST on August 11, 2020. The official music video went live simultaneously on Oakley’s YouTube channel and Instagram TV and the song is available to stream on Spotify and Apple Music.
Lifestyle Insider is a kind of junction point, connecting people with diverse interests that touch on the more luxurious aspects of lifestyle – fashion, design, travel, food and spirits, art, watches and jewellery, cars, yachts, and aviation, and technology. People today don’t fit into boxes and categories. In our individual ways, we are interested in diverse themes, products, and the challenges that face our world today. You will judge how well this effort of mine caters to your passions and proclivities.
Lifestyle Insider is a showcase of all that is beautiful and luxe. Behind every creation, is a designer, chef, entrepreneur, or a design maison. I have delved into my own appreciation for objetsde luxe that I have admired over the years – be it a love of fashion from the world’s top Parisian and Italian fashion maisons and their ’90s muses, or the care that goes into sari and Indian textile collections in my own family. Growing up on four continents, as the daughter of a former Indian Ambassador, I’ve seen a remarkable array of historic places and met a myriad people. My aim is to bring my world view into this website, a curation of what I find particularly stunning, unique, and newsworthy.
It’s an exciting time for brands all over the world. With change comes opportunity. With the global ‘reset’ and uncertainty on many fronts, there is a chance to write a new script. Let’s be those pioneers.
